Inspection is where you find moisture, contamination, weak concrete, movement, or an incompatible old coating before those conditions become trapped beneath a finish.

Map the surface

  • Mark cracks, spalls, joints, stains, and hollow or weak areas.
  • Separate structural or moving cracks from stable cosmetic defects.

Check for moisture

Use a test method accepted by the coating manufacturer. A dry-looking surface is not proof that the slab meets the system limit.

Identify old material

Determine whether paint, sealer, adhesive, curing compound, or oil is present and whether it can be fully removed.

Set a go / no-go point

Pause for active water, unsound concrete, unknown contamination, or movement that requires professional evaluation.

What is a concrete surface profile?A concrete surface profile is the measured texture created by grinding, blasting, or another approved method so a coating can bond to clean, sound concrete.
What is concrete outgassing?Outgassing is air moving from porous concrete into a wet coating. It can leave bubbles or pinholes, especially as a slab warms.
What is epoxy induction time?Induction time is a required wait after mixing and before application. Use it only when the exact product instructions call for it.
What does return to service mean?Return to service is the stated cure point for a specific exposure, such as foot traffic, water, chemical contact, or vehicle traffic.

How long does a DIY epoxy floor take?

Plan on multiple work sessions for clearing the room, testing, cleaning, repairs, profiling, coating, and cure. Many systems need roughly 24–72 hours before fuller service, but foot traffic, vehicles, water, and recoating may each have different windows. Follow the exact product instructions.

How much does it cost to epoxy a 2-car garage?

A DIY two-car garage epoxy floor often costs from the high hundreds into a few thousand dollars once grinding, repairs, primer, color coat, flakes, topcoat, PPE, and waste are included. The slab condition, square footage, coating thickness, tool rental, and system choice matter more than the price of the main kit alone.

Do I really need to grind the concrete?

Many professional-grade systems require mechanical profiling, but the approved method depends on the product and slab. Grinding can remove weak surface material and create a consistent profile; acid etching is not an automatic substitute. Use the method and profile specified by the coating manufacturer.

What causes hot-tire pickup?

Heat and tire plasticizers can stress an under-cured, incompatible, contaminated, or poorly bonded coating. Proper prep, compatible garage-rated layers, full vehicle-cure time, and the manufacturer’s system guidance matter more than a single marketing claim.

How long can an epoxy floor last?

There is no universal lifespan. Slab moisture, preparation, coating thickness, UV exposure, tires, chemicals, impact, maintenance, and topcoat choice all change performance. Inspect wear zones and repair chips early.

Can a first-timer do this safely?
